WHEN A LEADER DIES (4th September 2009)
Tomorrow, if he is lucky, his statue will be garlanded in some place and then will soon be forgotten by one and all. If he is too lucky, he will make it to the history books… but as the norms of life is… death always wins the race, however, top and big, a leader may be. Yes, death will leave none of us… However, the sooner one dies, there will be everyone telling stories of ‘how good a man he was etc etc…’
When a leader dies an unnatural death… there are probes and enquiries and after couple of months, everything is closed in a file… leaders who shed their crocodile tears at the funeral will remember all the bad or ugly deeds and criticize and there will always be some section of people, who will always say it happened for good… Curses of the affected citizen during his regime surely will sigh a relief… death defeats the biggest of the leaders in the world… be it Hitler, Stalin, Napolean, Alexander or else Saddam… Bush will die too and so will Obama one day…
When a leader dies, the whole nation goes topsy-turvy… mourning begins…reflection debated, few die-hard fan will commit suicide, political leaders will lie once again by praising how good a man he was… family heartbroken, children facing the cameras with brave conviction, shops closed, schools and colleges declare holidays, flag is lowered down half, goon party members will create havoc and chaos by attacking innocent people and ransack shops and commercial establishments, sea of people will gather to pay their last homage (irrespective of whether he was a good or a bad leader), the ugliest duty for police personal to control the crowd, news channels goes berserk with that stupid question – “How do you feel?” thrown at anyone who is there only to give the sound bytes, well… the ritual continues…
When a leader dies, a coterie of greedy and power hungry politicians will soon start their lobbying to be the first to replace the dead leader… while the whole country is mourning… how funny, strange and amazing it is to be in power! The punters will start their betting game as to who will be the next??? How well these punters exploit the situation even at such an hour… truly professional hah!!!
When a leader dies, everyone forgets the numbers of poor farmers and villagers, who either committed suicide because the drought relief never reached them in time or else were washed away in a watery grave in floods… their numbers are usually in hundreds and thousands, yet, not even a single leader in the world would bat an eyelid on the number of dead villagers, cattle and their crops… while one leader’s death causes the country to lose millions of rupees in a single day because of various…
The irony is that thousands of countrymen die daily due to various reasons yet no one cares… but when a leader dies… millions goes on waste… and the tragic drama is showcased with such pompous and grandeur… well, time to think about such national wastage… but who really cares when a leader dies…. Not the farmers who committed suicide because of him, not the villagers who were drowned in floods, not the one, who couldn’t get proper medical treatment because he was poor, not the one who is fighting a war on a daily basis, not the one who will succeed him…
When a leader dies… nature shows the world… no one is immortal, yet, our politicians instead of serving the people, exploits and loots them without even a single noble thoughts and deeds! Power destructs and nature shows it in the noblest way, when a leader dies…
